Collection: Vincent Lemaitre

Vincent Lemaitre looks for a primitive, incantatory painting, before or after civilization, a face-to-face with the stripped human, something raw and direct which liberates the back worlds and returns to its own essence.

It is a long-term approach which he has experimented with for more than 15 years. He uses altered paper: glued and then torn off, scraped, washed. With the support of painting, he creates simple concepts related to sign, rhythm, repetition and colour.

“With the progress of an artwork, painting and collage converge towards a whole, a synergistic material where it is difficult to discern the collage to the painting. But the reverse is also true, depending on the inclinations that influence the process, painting and collage split, diverge and differ from one another. I do not make the choice of either approach, the only rule which determines the continuation of the progress is to go to what guides me towards the intimate conviction that there is, perhaps, a continuation to glimpse."
